眼科領域のリハビリテーション

Rehabilitation in Ophthalmology.

■はじめに■

　身体障害者に対し，その失なわれた機能の回復をはかるとともに，残された機能の最大限の発揮をうながし，それによって出来る限り生産的な人間として社会に復帰させること，すなわち簡単にいえば身体障害者の社会復帰をリハビリテーションと呼ぶ。したがってリハビリテーションには，社会的施策（social rehabilitation）と医学面の関与（medical rehabilitation）とがあり，両者の密接な連繋のもとに初めて成り立つものである。昭和39年にはリハビリテーション医学会が設けられ，各科の医師のこの分野に対する関心が俄かに昂まってきた。筆者は今年度のリハビリテーション医学会において，眼科領域の現況に関し特別講演を命じられ，これを機会に我が国の現況や問題点をまとめてみたので，その概要を記述してこの分野に関する御理解を仰ぎたいものと考える。

Re-adaptation to social activity of persons who lost sight at adult age is conducted by numerous rehabilitation centers with profes-sional training facilities. Statistics shows that the number of persons who become blind postnatally is sharply decreasing. There is, an alarming tendency, however, that more and more people are becoming blind due to the syndrome of Behcet, in which ocular and systemic symptoms tend to recur even after becoming blind and which become exacerbated from occupational activity.
