Abstract. Purpose:To report influence of cataract surgery on visual outcome performed before photodynamic therapy for age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 19 eyes of 16 cases who received cataract surgery followed by triamcinolone-assisted photodynamic therapy for AMD within 14 days. The series comprised 13 males and 6 females. The age ranged from 63 to 87 years, average 75 years. Their visual acuity averaged 0.073. Visual acuity 6 months after treatment was evaluated in terms of logMAR. Change by 0.3 or over was defined as improvement or deterioration. Results:Treatment was performed on average of 1.1 sessions. Visual acuity improved in 1 eye(5%),remained unchanged in 16(84%),and deteriorated in 2(11%). The macular volume decreased significantly after 3 months of treatment. There were no serious complications throughout. Conclusion:Cataract surgery prior to photodynamic therapy showed no impact on visual acuity of macular volume up to 6 months after treatment.
