Abstract. Purpose:To report the accuracy of axial length measured with a noncontact optical instrument in eyes filled with silicone oil. Cases and Method:This study was made on 26 eyes that received vitreous surgery with the vitreous replaced by silicone oil. Measurement was made before and after removal of silicone oil. An IOL MasterTM was used for measurement. Thirteen eyes received implantation of intraocular lens(IOL)after removal. Results:The axial length averaged 24.28±3.03 mm before and 24.26±2.87 mm after removal of silicone oil. There was no significant difference between the two values. Refraction after IOL implantation based on the present method was essentially the same as that by conventional ultrasound measurement. Conclusion:There is no difference in axial length in eyes filled with or without silicone oil when measured by IOL MasterTM. IOL implantation can be made immediately after removal of silicone oil based on the measured axial length.
