Abstract. Purpose:To report a case who developed burns in the fovea in both eyes while training for arc-welding. Case:A 20-year-old male was being trained to use arc-welding. He watched the arcs without wearing protective mask. He noticed blurring in the central visual field in both eyes the next morning. Findings:His corrected visual acuity was 0.2 right and 0.3 left. Both eyes showed oval and turbid fovea with central scotoma. Paracentral visual acuity improved 2 months later with the central visual acuity of 0.06 right and 0.05 left. Conclusion:To our best knowledge, there has been no reported case of retinal burns by welding arcs in Japan. Wearing of protective mask is to be enforced during arc-welding to avoid such an accident.
