Abstract. Background:Reportedly, lymphoid hyperplasia and inflammatory lesions are more frequent in Japan than in North America among orbital tumors and tumorous lesions. Purpose:To review primary orbital tumor and tumorous lesions seen by us. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 265 cases who were diagnosed with orbital tumor or tumorous lesion during the past 6 years. Results:Malignant tumor was present in 88 cases(33%) and benign tumor in 177 cases(67%). Among 119 males, malignant tumor was present in 45 cases(37%) and benign tumor in 74 cases(63%). Among 146 females, malignant tumor was present in 43 cases(29%) and benign tumor in 103 cases(71%). Lymphoplastic lesion was diagnosed in 85 cases(32%), followed by inflammatory lesion in 59 cases(22%), vascular lesion in 48 cases(18%), optic nerve tumor in 5 cases(2%) and others in 68 cases(26%). When compared with similar reports from Japan and North America, incidence of lymphoplastic lesion was significantly higher in the Japanese, and that of vascular lesion and optic nerve tumor was significantly lower(p<0.01). Conclusion:Among orbital tumor and tumorous lesions, the Japanese appear to have higher incidence of lymphoplastic lesion and lower incidence of vascular lesion and optic nerve tumor.
