Purpose:In this study we investigated whether body-cast treatment is of greater benefit than brace treatment in preventing the progression of vertebral collapse in patients with osteoporotic compression fractures.
Methods:The subjects were 52 patients aged >65 years old who had an osteoporotic thoracolumbar compression fracture. We treated 36 patients with a bodycast and 16 patients with either a hard brace or a soft brace and then evaluated the vertebral body collapse rate at one month and at three months.
Outcome:There was no significant defference between body-cast group and brace group.
Conclusion:Body-cast treatment does not provide any advantage over brace treatment as a means of preventing progression of vertebral collapse in elderly patients with osteoporotic compression fractures.
