Purpose:Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare type of soft tissue sarcoma with a predilection for occurrence in the elderly, and it has a poor prognosis. However, several recent studies have reported that neoadjuvant chemotherapy improved the prognosis.

Methods:We retrospectively investigated the clinical outcome of 17 extraskeletal osteosarcoma patients treated by our group to clarify the clinical impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Results:The 5-year overall survival rate of the multimodal treatment group (wide surgical margin + chemotherapy before and/or after surgery) and the non-multimodal treatment group was 54.6% and 16.7%, respectively, indicating that multimodal treatment that included neoadjuvant chemotherapy improves the prognosis of patients with extraskeletal osteosarcoma.

Conclusions:Neoadjuvant chemotherapy improve the prognosis of patients with extraskeletal osteosarcoma.
