[Aim] The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics of health-related QOL in surgically treated cervical myelopathy patients. [Subjects] Thirty-five cervical myelopathy patients and 30 healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. [Methods] Objective severity (JOA score), subjective severity (SSFS), and health-related QOL (SF-8) were assessed before surgery and at the time of discharge from the hospital. [Results] Most of the items on the SF-8 showed significant improvement postoperatively, but the results for more than half of them were significantly poorer than in the healthy subjects. Furthermore, the SSFS scores were more closely correlated with the SF-8 scores than with the JOA scores. [Conclusion] The results suggested that the health-related QOL of cervical myelopathy patients is affected more by subjective severity than by objective severity.
