This study was designed to evaluate the redistribution of foot pressure when rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with metatarsalgia wore an arch pad with ankle-strapping or an inserted arch pad. Foot pressure with and without arch pads was measured in 15 RA patients with metatarsalgia and 15 age-matched healthy subjects without foot pain (control group). Foot pressure under the hindfoot and the forefoot wearing the arch pad was lower than without the arch pad in the both the RA patients and control group, but foot pressure under the midfoot wearing the arch pad was higher than without the arch pad. The decreasing ratio of pressure in the forefoot and increasing ratio in the midfoot were significantly greater when wearing the arch pad with ankle-strapping than when wearing the inserted arch pad. We concluded that wearing the arch pad with ankle-strapping would enhance the beneficial biomechanical effect of inserted arch pads.
