Fibromyalgia (FM) and chronic widespread pain (CWP) are both syndromes that cause widespread pain and their prevalence is approximately 2% and more than 10%, respectively. Age at the initial visit, age at onset, sex ratio, and ratio of posttraumatic onset of 53 patients with FM and 52 patients with CWP were compared. Age at the initial visit of the FM patients and CWP patients was 51.6 years and 54.1 years respectively, age at onset was 44.4 years and 46.5 years respectively, proportion of females was 69.8% and 76.9%, respectively and proportion with posttraumatic onset was 37.7% and 34.6%, respectively. I speculate that in some cases CWP represents a stage in the developmant of FM, because both syndromes show similar symptoms and epidemiologic characteristic but symptoms of FM are more serious than those of CWP.
