  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We report a case of osteoporotic vertebral burst fracture treated by vertebroplasty. The patient was a 77-year-old woman who presented with pain in the left iliac area. Non-surgical treatment was continued for 8 weeks, but it failed to relieve the pain. We therefore performed vertebroplasty with hydroxyapatite sticks and a pedicle screw system, and the pain resolved immediately after surgery. The same kind of pain recurred two months postoperatively, but it significantly diminished by 4months after surgery. Loss of correction of the vertebra was seen on a radigraph taken 2months after surgery. We concluded that vertebroplasty is an effective means of relieving the low back pain of elderly patients immediately after surgery, but that some pain may recure a few weeks after surgery due to loss of correction of the vertebra.
