  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A new device for continuous monitoring of ex-tradural, intracranial pressure is described and its cardinal features are summarized.

A strip of SFT element, 3011 in thickness, 2.4 mm in length and 1.3 mm in width, is bonded on the surface of the metal diaphragm made of 50μ thick stainless steel, and the rim of the diaphragm is fixed at the edge of the cylindrical base. The SFT, a new type semiconductor strain gauge, is the piezoresistive element wherein the thin ger-manium film of less than la in thickness is vacuum deposited on the polyimide film of 30μ in thick-ness. Any elongation given to the SFT causes the resistance increase and vice versa.

The main and innovating feature of this element is that the temperature coefficients of both sensi-tivity and terminal resistance are made sufficiently low while retaining high dauge factor. With this and other features, linear and wide range opera-tions both for positive and nedative pressures are ensured.
