  • Look Inside

As a histochemical study of muscular disorders, following three subjects were investigated in 280 cases with various neuromuscular diseases among whom there were 75 with myopathies including genetically determined, metabolic, and inflammatory disorders ; 1. difference in severity of muscular involvement between type I and If fibers, 2. analysis of structral changes by means of histohemistry and 3. intramuscular metabolic changes detected by histochemistry. The result from these patients were also compared with that of animal experiments.

Among various mypathies, certain numbers of the diseases had a tendency of selective involvement of either one of both types. However, it was sho-wn that very careful analysis is necessary in deter-mining a selective type lesion in the diseased. process Analysis of structural changes of muscle fibers with histochemical method was proved to be effective especially in comparing the distribution of the change within muscle fibers. It was concluded that the difference of neurogenic change and myo-pathy was quantitative rather than qualitative in some aspects. Histochemical procedure was turned out to be inadequate or, at least, not completely sati-sfacory in studying metabolic disturbance in the muscle fibers. The histochemical results were mu-ch more influenced by structural change than by biochemical change. It was thought to be proper to emphasize the value of re-investigation of the role of innervation in myopathic process.
