  • Look Inside

In order to collect the CSF cells effectively and without causing morphological damages to the cells, many kinds of attempt had been made. Recently, Sayk's sedimentation chamber method (Sedimen-tierkammerverfahren) seems to bring a remarkable advance in this field, providing cytomorphological preparation of good quality in the small circle on the slide glass. In this method, however, a lot of CSF cells are absorbed into the filter paper and become unavailable during the process. Then, we have deviced an new apparatus of centrifuging-sedimentation chamber, to make the stream of CSF cells in the chamber straight to the slide glass and increase the gravitation vector on the cells up to 100-500 G. We have succeeded in increasing number of the collected cells about 20-30 times than that of using the simple sedimentation chamber method, and shortening time required for the process to 5-6 minutes. We have not recognized any significant morphological damages in the cells caused by in-creased G. This is able to be recommended as a routine labolatory method, because the apparatus can be easily and reasonably manufactured with plastics, and centrifuged easily using the centrifuge which is provided ordinarily in every labola tory.

Several cases of CSF brain tumour cells are pre-sented, which are collected using our centrifuging sedimentation chamber apparatus.
