  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The characteristic of periodic psychoses is psycho-biological instability, of which the functional vulnera-bility of the diencephalo-pituitary system can be posulated as consitituting the predispositional back-ground. Because of such a predisposition, acute breakdown of the psychic function tends to recure frequently either autochthonously or reactively. Along with the mental breakdown, periodic psychoses show various endocrine disorders, which are of themselves a non-specific bodily reaction, but have great significance in giving clues to therapy.

The most important of these reactions is hormone metabolism disturbance in the liver. The author interprets this metabolic disturbance as an aspect of breakdown in cerebro-hepatic homeostasis which has great importance in the pathogenesis of acute psy-choses such as the periodic psychoses.
