  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Various degrees of amyloid β-protein deposits (AmD) were observed in the brains of non-demented individuals and note was taken of the incidence and extent of AmD increase with aging. The psychological significance of AmD in methenamine-silver stained sections was studied through retrospective examination of the clinical records of both moderate and severe AmD cases selected by a screening study of many non-demented cases. Psychotic symptoms were observed in 1 of 6 moderate AmD cases and 5 of 7 severe AmD cases, whereas none of 12 age-matched control cases without, or with only sporadic AmD revealed psychotic signs. Symptoms consisted of delirium (4 cases) , hallucinatory paranoid state (2 cases; 1 of the 2 cases were accompanied by delirium during their course) and depressive state (one case). The results indicate two possibilities; 1) AmD is part of the organic background of senile psychosis and 2) some of these cases had a subclinical state of senile dementia of Alzheimer type, and the psychotic symptoms may have been the initial signs of the disease.
