Fifty-one patients with schizophrenia(26 males and 25 females)who agreed to the study were examined for leukocyte fractionation and serum protein and psychiatric symptoms assessed by BPRS every four weeks from the time of admission. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio(NLR)in the schizophrenia group was significantly higher than in the control group at admission, but normalized after 4 weeks. Serum total protein was lower at admission than in the control group and continued to decline until week 12. NLR was associated with psychiatric symptoms, but serum total protein was not associated with psychiatric symptoms. Discriminant analysis using NLR, total protein, sex, and age was performed to quantitatively diagnose schizophrenia. As a result, it was possible to predict the diagnosis with moderate accuracy.
