Despite the increase in recognition of depression, many young adults do not seek professional help. This study aims to find the difference of mental health literacy between those who have intention and no intention towards seeking professional help. A total of 692 students participated in a questionnaire survey on their recognition of depression including symptoms, risk factors, utility of treatment, effectiveness of treatment and help-seeking intention. The results showed that 60.7% of young adults recognized depression from a vignette, and 43.8% of them had intension for professional help. Respondents who preferred professional help-seeking had characteristics such as recognizing more physical symptoms, biological/environmental risk factors and the effectiveness of treatments. Future directions for effective strategies in promoting access to professional health care are discussed.
