This study assessed tongue pressure, handgrip strength, and daily medical treatments(chlorpromazine(CP)equivalent dose, biperiden(BPD)equivalent dose, and diazepam(DAP)equivalent dose)in male schizophrenic patients without dysphagia(52 cases;aged 40-79 years)and in healthy controls(48 cases;aged 40-79 years). It was determined that handgrip strength and tongue pressure in schizophrenic patients were lower than that in healthy controls among all ages(p<0.05). Tongue pressure and handgrip strength correlated with age and with each other in healthy controls. The patients with schizophrenia exhibited only a weak correlation between handgrip strength and these parameters. Furthermore, tongue pressure and handgrip strength in patients with schizophrenia showed negligible correlations among the various daily medical treatments, including CP equivalent dose, BPD equivalent dose, and DAP equivalent dose. The maximum tongue pressure in 40-year-old schizophrenic patients was lower than that in healthy 70-year-olds(p<0.05). These results suggest that 40-year-old schizophrenic patients already have a high risk of choking.
