The neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is one of the side effects induced by neuroleptica. However, its etiology and clinical classification have yet not been well difined because its neuro-pathology fails to show specific findings. Presented here are clinicopathological studies of 22 cases with NMS, and they are classified into two types according not only to the clinical features, but also to the pathological findings in the brain and muscular systems.

The first type (reversible NMS) is a classical form of NMS which is defined as follows. The clinical feature; the autonomic nervous system plays an important role in th disturbance of consciousness and increased muscular tonus (rigidity) such as acute extrapyramidal reaction. In one case consciousness was not lost and the non-rigid form was found in four cases. There is no specific corelation between this type and the dose of neuroleptica or the psychosis.
