  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Thiepine derivate, Zotepine, has already been known to have a neuroleptic effect and is broadly on the market in Japan. The result of our clinical study on Zotepine shows that its main target symptom is excitement. No matter how catatonic, reactive or manic the nature of excitement may be, this drug has a strong sedative effect on it. We found, secondarily, antihallucinatory-delusional effect and some effect on emotional disturbance. As far as side effects are concerned, drowsiness, fatigue, and motorretardation are prominent, however parkinson's symptom and anticholinergic symptom are less and weak.

In addition, this drug considerably reduces the level of serum uric acid and this function is, we infer, mutually related to sedative-antimanic effect. No other psychotropic drug has been reported to effect metabolism of uric acid so far, thus this drug has quite a new and unique role.
