Summary

In this paper we give an overview of the programmes in Scotland, England and Wales that represent the new era of anti-stigma activity in the U. K. These programmes have in common the following:delivery mainly or entirely by groups other than health professionals, namely mental health charities and consumer groups;a long term approach;the use of social marketing methods with the aims of increasing awareness, improving attitudes and ultimately changing behaviours towards people with mental health problems;and engagement with people with mental health problems to empower them to tackle stigma and discrimination. Proceeding in chronological order, we first describe the Scottish ‘see me campaign 2002-2013, the results of its evaluation, and outline the new see me programme for 2013-2016. We then summarise England's Time to Change(TTC) programme 2007-2011 and describe how it was evaluated, and outline the delivery and evaluation of Phase 2 of TTC(2011-2015). Last, we describe TTC Wales.
