The education of nurses is essential to minimize the use of seclusion and restraint(S/R). The Japanese Psychiatric Nurses Association regularly holds a training course on this prosess. This study aims to survey how much the course contributes to the reduction of S/R use at the attendees'(nurses')workplaces. The total number of nurses who attended the training course was 224 throughout the 2008 to 2010 fiscal years;108 nurses(48.2%)reported on the number of S/R in their wards one month before attending the training course and three and six months afterwards. The medians of the monthly cumulative days of resistraint use at one month before training and three and six months afterwards were 30.0, 11.0 and 25.5 days respectively. Compared to the monthly cumulative days of restraint before course attendance. The amount reported three months afterwards showed a significant decrease, whereas no significant defference was seen six months after the training. The frequency of restraint decreased immediately after the training but returned to the original amount after six months.
