In this paper, we tried to illustrate the current situation and morbidity of “exercise dependence” in Japan. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 73 non-expert exercisers to evaluate whether their behavior meets the diagnosis criteria of exercise dependence. As a result, it became evident that the diagnosis criteria of primary and secondary exercise dependence were fulfilled by nobody. Four of 73 subjects met the criteria of “sub-clinical exercise dependence”, but three of them showed no sign of psychological impairment on normative scales. However these results don't necessarily mean that exercise dependence doesn't exist. According to Suwaki, addictive behavior exhibits qualities such as normal (habit)-abnormal (dependence) in a level continuum. Therefore further research is required to study the existence and morbidity of exercise dependence.
