Summary

The difference between the scores of the revised version of Hasegawa's dementia scale (HDS-R) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was examined in an Alzheimer-type dementia (ATD) group (448 patients), a vascular dementia (VaD) group (94 patients), a dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) group (21 patients) and a frontotemporal dementia (FTD) group (27 patients). Our results showed that the HDS-R score was significantly lower than the MMSE score in the ATD group, but there were no significant differences in the other groups. In the sub tasks the ATD group showed difficulty in the “recall” task. The “copy design” task revealed more inadequacy in the VaD and DLB groups than in the other groups. The FTD group was characterized by a low correlation between the difficulty of the task and the scores. In conclusion, it may be said that the characteristics of cognitive impairment in various dementing disorders may be reflected in these scores.
