As the advance of the studies on cardiopulmonary physiology is quite striking in the last few years, I would like to review the study on respiration carried out in Japan during 1961.
Its characteristics could be concluded as follows. While theoretical studies on respiration were reported, the clinical application of pulmonary function tests was very actively carried out. That is because the interest of the chest clinician was changed to the nontuberculous pulmonary diseases such as pulmonary emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and others from the pulmonary tuberculosis by the appearance of antituberculous agents.
