Esophageal lesions exhibiting subepithelial growth include various benign and malignant tumors, such as common squamous cell carcinomas, atypical histologic carcinomas, and nonepithelial tumors. Although lesion localization within the esophageal wall varies, the outermost layer of the lesion is often covered with normal squamous epithelium. Furthermore, subepithelial or submucosal tumors may protrude into the lumen in a spherical or semispherical shape. Information on lesion color cannot be determined using radiographic examinations ; thus, interpreting the surface properties, morphology of the lesion origin, hardness and softness of the lesion, and site of occurrence is necessary. This article outlines the radiographic characteristics and differential diagnosis of esophageal lesions exhibiting subepithelial growth based on literature review and the imaging findings from our own cases.
