 As compared with cancer of the pyloric antrum, that of the body tends to reach the serosal layer easily. Thus, it is considered that gastric body cancer has a tendency to penetrate the muscularis mucosae more easily than pyloric antrum one.

 We have studied the rate of invasive cancer foci which shows how many cancer foci invade beyond the muscularis mucosae in relation to size, location and histological type of cancer.

 Conclusions are as follows ;

 (1) Undifferentiated gastric cancers arising in the body far more easily invade beyond the muscularis mucosae even when the tumor is small (less than 2.0 cm in diameter) than differentiated ones of the body and any type of cancers of the pyloric antrum.

 (2) The rate of vertical invasion in differentiated and undifferentiated gastric cancer of the pyloric antrum showed a similar tendency. Therfore, the rate is considered to be more related to the size of cancer than to histological type in cancers of the pyloric antrum.
