  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Although there have been numerous reports of bezoar, that in gastrectomized patient has been scarcely reported. The fact that no stagnation takes place in the gastrectomized patient because of the absence of the pyloric sphincter is responsible for rarity of bezoar formation in such patients. However, both in Europe and North America, attention has been given to the fact that bezoar in gastrectomized patient may easily pass into the small bowel and become the cause of mechanical ileus.

A case of small bowel obstruction due to a bezoar was seen in a gastrectomized patient after Billroth I resection. Roentgenograms of a large bezoar in the small bowel are fairly characteristic, but differentiation between bezoar and small bowel tumor is sometimes difiicult.

We have discussed the reason why small bowel obstruction due to bezoar occurs more frequently after Billroth Ⅱ resection than after Billroth Ⅰ.
