Endoscopy, dissecting microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and roentgenographic examination are utilized as procedures for pathophysiological analysis of the small intestine (duodenum, jejunum and ileum) on the basis of observations on the magnified mucosal surface.

In this study, the observations by endoscopy and dissecting microscopy are mainly stated. It is now possible to observe the individual villus of the intestinal mucosa by the improvement of endoscopic apparatus both in resolution and magnification and also by the magnification up to 30 times (Maruyama et al. 1972, Hiratsuka et al. 1977).

Specific changes of the villi in disease of the small intestine such as ulcer, lymphagioectasia and celiac disease can be detected by this technique.

On the other hand, it is also possible to observe the absorption of materials such as methylene blue or fat into the bowel mucosa by the endoscopic examination following their administration (loading endoscopy, Tanaka et al. 1974).

In addition, it is possible to analyze the structure of the villi obtained by target biopsy, the intramucosal absorption of a material and an enzymatic activity in the mucosa by dissecting microscopy (Tanaka et al. 1974).

By endoscopy and dissecting microscopy, fine structures of the intestinal villi and their function are grasped together.

In this study, a part of the results by these procedures is presented. The small intestine is now the object of detailed study in its total length by the endoscopic examination (Ropeway method, Hiratsuka et al. 1971). But, the study by these methodologies is still short in history. Sucesstive productions of new knowledge are very much expected.
