  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The normal cardia may show a protrusion mimicking a carcinoma by barium study or computer tomoghaphy (CT) scan. The disappearance of this protrusion by breathing or postural change is important for distinguish normality from a true tumor. The cardia is located between the esophagus and stomach, and has a transitional zone between squamous cells and grandular epithelium. Many kinds of diseases originating from the esophagus or stomach may involve the cardia. Extrinsic pressure by normal or enlarged organs including the liver, spleen, splenic flexure, kidney, adrenal gland, aorta, and heart may mimic a carcinoma of the cardia. The knowledge of distinctive features of these tumors or tumorous lesions enables an accurate diagnosis.
