The pattern recognition of EUS images enables the diagnosis of depth of infiltration of early colorectal cancers according to the subclassification of sm invasion depth. A miniature ultrasonic probe is more suited for the diagnosis of early cancers. EUS is more suited for the diagnosis of superficial type lesions than elevated ones. The diagnosis of EUS is slightly superior to that of ordinary colonoscopy, so the combination of both modalities is expected to improve the diagnostic accuracy. The causes of incorrect diagnoses in EUS include insufficient visualization of lesions and the presence of inflammatory cell infiltration and/or fibrosis. By analyzing the features of the hypoechoic area, an estimation of histology may be possible. EUS is not essential for diagnosing the depth of cancer infiltration in early colorectal cancers, but it is definitely beneficial in some cases. It is also true that experience with many cases is necessary for physicians hoping to improve the diagnostic accuracy of EUS.
