Gastrointestinal manifestations are common in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE). The intestinal lesions in SLE have been classified into lupus enteritis caused by small-vessel vasculitis and protein-losing enteropathy. The former type can further be classified into the ischemic enteritis type and the multiple ulcers type. The ischemic enteritis type is characterized by acute onset and severe submucosal edema. Protein-losing enteropathy results in hypoproteinemia. Ischemic enteritis and protein-losing enteropathy respond to steroids. In contrast, multiple ulcers are intractable to medication, and they possibly progress to intestinal perforation.
