The classic presentation of Mallory-Weiss syndrome is that of repeated vomiting with increasing intra-abdominal pressure followed by hematemesis. Mallory-Weiss tears occur near the gastroesophageal junction. Many patients with Mallory-Weiss syndrome have a history of alcohol intake. They account for 5 % to 15 % of UGI hemorrhages and male patients are affected more frequently than female patients. The bleeding usually resolves with conservative management, although endoscopic therapy may be required for patients with active bleeding.
