Objective: This study aimed to clarify the support nurses provide to oldest-old people living alone in urban areas, enabling them to maintain good health.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 nursing staff. In the analysis, we coded segments describing the support nursing staff provided to the oldest-old people living alone to help them maintain good health. Based on similarities and differences among codes, we developed subcategories, categories, and core categories.

Results: Two core categories emerged from the support provided by nursing staff to help the oldestold people living alone maintain healthy lives:“complementing the existing abilities of the oldest-old people”and“building a system to support the oldest-old people.”

Conclusions: Nursing staff recommended formal services to the oldest-old people while confirming their intentions and living conditions. They also supported the maintenance of life functions. Furthermore, as part of developing a support system for oldest-old people, we worked with formal and informal supporters to provide support so that oldest-old people living alone could maintain good health.
