Objective: To clarify the relationship between work-family conflict (WFC) and job satisfaction among female nurses who are raising children.

Methods: 2,020 female nurses with children aged 0-6 years working in hospitals with 200 or more acute-care beds were included in the study. The survey items were the subject's attributes, the Japanese version of the Work-family Conflict Scale, and the nurses' job satisfaction scale. Multiple regression analysis was conducted with job satisfaction as the dependent variable and the six subscales of the WFC as independent variables.

 Results: Valid responses were obtained from 554 respondents (valid response rate 84.3%), and the WFC subscales were [Time WIF] (β = ─.109, p = .024), [Stress WIF] (β = ─.146, p = .004), [Stress FIW] (β = ─.094, p = .037), and [Behavior FIW] (β = ─.147, p = .006) influenced job satisfaction.

Conclusion: Female nurses raising children reported that the following sub-scales of the WFC had a negative impact on job satisfaction: Time WIF, Stress WIF, Stress FIW, and Behavior FIW. Organizational support systems and evaluative support for the professionalism of nurses are effective measures for supporting continued employment.
