This study aimed to present the academic challenges of nursing care for preserving people's dignity in Japan by examining the concept of dignity as used in the nursing field. First, we reviewed the academic interpretation of the term, then confirmed research trends in the nursing field and nursing diagnoses that incorporate the concept of human dignity, and finally examined the terminology used in nursing practice in Japan. Dignity in the nursing field combines substantialism and relationalism, and there are issues with the overall picture of nursing, culture, and its relationship to care. In the discourse on concepts of dignity, there is a risk that nursing care that can be shared with people will disappear. Therefore, the use of nursing diagnoses needs to be developed to assess the cycle of care and dignity, and it is also necessary to verbalise practical wisdom to grasp a shared sense between those giving and those receiving nursing care and make full use of nursing practice in Japan.
