Abstract Purpose:To investigate the type and clinical symptoms of Adenovirus(AdV) conjunctivitis that has been prevalent in a community after the COVID-19 outbreak in Fukuoka.

Methods:This retrospective study was made on 72 eyes of 72 cases diagnosed with AdV conjunctivitis at Kawahara Eye Clinic and Fukuoka University Hospital between January 1, 2022 and March 31, 2024, in which AdV was detected in AdV antigen test kit residue samples by hexon partial PCR.

Results:The mean age was 27.6±16.9 years, while 4 of the 72 cases had negative AdV antigen tests. AdV antigen tests were performed on average 2.3±7.1 days after onset, and all 7 patients who had been performed the test on day 0 of onset were positive. AdV types identified by PCR testing of the hexon were AdV3 in 49 cases, AdV37 in 8 cases, AdV8, 53, and 56 in 4 cases each, AdV64/85 in 2 cases, and AdV54 in 1 case. Conjunctival pseudomembrane was observed in 1 case of AdV8, and keratitis was observed in 3 cases of AdV3, 2 cases of AdV8, and 1 case of AdV54, respectively, but multiple corneal subepithelial infiltrates were observed in only 1 case of AdV56. A family history including fever before the onset was present in 37 cases, more than half of the cases.

Conclusion:The most common type detected in this study was AdV3 of species B, which was consistent with the detection results of the nationwide surveillance. The ophthalmological clinical symptoms of PCF were relatively milder than EKC, however, three cases were complicated with keratitis. Since AdV3, which causes PCF, is transmitted by droplets and contact, it is particularly important to take measures to prevent the spread of infection.
