Objective: To identify the process by which families who belong to the family association of individuals with schizophrenia rebuild their own individual lives as carers.

Methods: Interviews were conducted with eight carers belonging to family associations their family with schizophrenia, and the collected data were analyzed using the Modified Grounded Theory Approach(M-GTA).

Results: The process by which families who belong to the family association of individuals with schizophrenia rebuild their own individual lives as carers begins by "freeing oneself from overburdened caregiving". This is followed by the mutual influences of "recognizing the need for illness support", "accepting assistance from other supporters", "accepting one's own inherent prejudices" , and "liberating oneself from mental entrapment" , gradually leading to the "development of an appropriate care method". With the "development of an appropriate care method" as the turning point, "restarting a life with self-respect" was initiated, ultimately leading to "creating a new self as a carer".

Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that they can be adapted to carer supports as a practice model of carer support. In the future, we aim to develop a more sophisticated practice model of carer support by applying and verifying it as a practice model.
