  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Structure and function of an axon, which contains no protein synthesizing machinery, is maintained by two types of intracellular transport system, anterograde and retrograde axonal transport. The for-mer is subdivided into two types according to the rate of transport, slow and fast anterograde axonal transport. Cytoskeletal components such as tubulin, actin and neurofilament proteins, which are neces-sary for the maintenance of axonal structure, are transported from the cell body to the axon terminal by anterograde slow axonal transport. On the other hand, substances necessary for the synaptic functions such as neuropeptides and enzymes used for synthesis and degradation of neurotransmitters are synthe-sized and delivered to the axon terminal by anterograde fast axonal transport. Substances incorporated from outside of the axon and those turned over at the axon terminal are delivered to the cell body by retrograde axonal transport, which belongs to fast axonal transport in terms of the rate of the trans-port.
