  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We compared the academic achievements of 25 DSM-Ⅲ schizophrenic patients with those of their 25 healthy siblings using their report-cards during their elementary schooling and junior high schooling. In the lower grades of elementary schools, the patients were lower in their achievements in art (p<0.05), music (p<0.1) and mathematics (p<0.1) than their siblings. In the higher grades of elementary schools and junior high schools no statistically significant differences were found between the patients and their siblings (paired t-test).

The number of the subjects who had received negative ratings by their teachers on their artistic design (p<0.05), paintings (p<0.1) or gymnastic skill (p<0.05) in the lower grades of elementary schools, or on their reading ability (p<0.1) in the higher grades of elementary schools was higher than the number of their sibling who were rated negatively.

These findings suggest that antecedents of the neuropsychological and cognitive deficits found in schizophrenic patients may already be present in their schooldays.
