Background:The fourth consensus guidelines for the management of postoperative nausea and vomiting(PONV)recommends identifying patients’ risk and implementing prophylactic interventions accordingly. We investigated whether the same number of prophylactic interventions listed in the guidelines are applicable for Japanese patients.

Methods:The incidence of PONV at 24 hr postoperatively was retrospectively analyzed in three groups of adult patients:those for whom(i)no interventions were implemented(n=429),(ii)a reduced number of interventions were implemented(intermediate risk:1, high risk:2)(n=541), and(iii)the number of interventions matched those of the guidelines(intermediate risk:2, high risk:3)(n=544).

Results:The incidence of PONV was 28.9% in the no-interventions group, 16.8% in the reduced-interventions group, and 13.2% in the same-interventions group.

Conclusions:The incidence of PONV at 24 hr postoperatively was not significantly different between the reduced-interventions group and the same-interventions group.
