多摩地区は東京のおおよそ西側半分で，人口は東京全体の約1/3に相当する。杏林大学医学部付属病院はその多摩地区の東側に存在する三鷹市に存在しており，東側は23区と接しているベッドタウンである。特に多摩地区の東半分の医療を中心的に貢献しており，多摩地区で唯一の大学病院の本院となる。これまでは当施設ではPET装置を有しておらず，また多摩地区にPET保有施設も十分ではなかった。そのため，PETを施行する際には，病院から片道1時間ほどかかる施設に検査依頼をしていた。加えて，地域のがん患者の入院需要が増加傾向にあり，当院でもがん関連の受け入れ患者数が持続的に多く認められていたので，PET装置導入の必然性があった。また，人間ドックの充実を図っており，これを機にオプションとしてPET検診が取り入れられている。

The new Digital PET scanar released in the autumun of 2019 by Canon Medical Systems is the first digital PET-CT scanar developed and produced in JAPAN. The use of a SiPM photo censor has resuleted in a high-quality digital detector with significant improvement in TOF resolution. The orignal image reconstruction method of Canon Medical systems also has a significant impact on image quality（CaLM, AiCE）. The usefulness of these new technologies will be widely recognized in the near future.
