This study examines the support necessary to prevent the resignation and dismissal of nurses from their place of employment by applying a worthwhileness among nurses. To this end, the study arranged for a series of semi-structured interviews with twelve full-time mental health nurses working in Partnership Nursing System®.

We analyzed the contents of survey interviews and identified eight categories of nursing worthwhileness. The worthwhileness was centered around one of these eight categories, namely, 1) the feeling of confidence that one is needed by their team. In addition, the ways in which nursing care was provided was found to relate the following three categories: 2) A nurse's confidence in their ability to mitigate hesitation in decision-making; 3) The shared feeling between patients and nurses that they are able to safeguard each other's well-being; and 4) Liberation from having to take on too many duties and responsibilities. The remaining four categories for worthwhileness follow: 5) Motivation for self-improvement; 6) Sense of satisfaction that comes from building trust with patients; 7) Sense of fulfillment regarding the results of nursing care; and 8) The mental strength to control one's emotions. These eight categories were found to be interrelated and to increase nursing worthwhileness.

In order to prevent dismissals and resignations of mental health nurses, it seems important to establish a system to regulate how nursing care is provided, as well as to provide support for nurses in controlling their emotions.
