Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate how nurses working in general hospitals make judgments on whether to discontinue physical restraint.

Method: From August to October 2010, a self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted by mail with 6,212 nurses working at 36 general hospitals.

Results: Judgments by 2,858 nurses on discontinuing physical restraint were analyzed in a factor analysis. Three factors were identified: "Stability of the mental status of the patient," "Stability of the movement of the patient," "Organizational judgments." There was a high correlation between "Stability of the mental status of the patient" and "Stability of the movement of the patient"(r = .62).

Conclusion: The results suggested that the mental status of patients and the stability of their movements could play a crucial role in judging whether to discontinue physical restraint.
