Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate physiological and psychological effects of hot spring bathing on healthy adults.

Methods: The 310 adults who came to the hot spring public bath facilities(4 facilities) and agreed to participate to the study were subsequently included. Physiological and psychological data were collected on the subjects before and after bathing. Physiological data included blood pressure(BP), pulse, body temperature(BT), and arterial oxygen saturation(SpO2). Concurrently collected psychological data included feelings of relaxation and tiredness, and subjective evaluations of general physical condition and pre-existing symptoms.

Results: Average age of the subjects was 66.4±11.0 years, and the ratio of male to female was 1 to 1. The main purpose of using hot spring public bath facilities was to convalesce, the frequency of facility use being 1 to 2 times in a week. After entering the water, about 90% of the subjects submerged themselves to neck level. Average submerged time was 16.5±14.2 minuets. BP decreased, pulse and BT increased, and SpO2 degreased after bathing. Most frequently reported pre-existing symptoms were backache, stiff shoulders, and joint pain; most subjects reported that these symptoms had been relieved. Most subjects reported feeling relaxed and refreshed after bathing. The results indicated possible application of hot spring bathing for community residents to promote their health.
