Aim: This study aimed to identify actions that nurses take in acute care hospital settings to continue with care for elderly people from the perspective of other healthcare professionals who work with nurses.

Methods: Eight healthcare professionals who work with nurses participated in semi-structured interviews regarding nursing actions to continue care for elderly people. Interview data were analyzed using a qualitative synthesis method.

Results: The actions that nurses take in acute care hospital settings to continue with care for elderly people from the perspective of other healthcare professionals who work with nurses are “providing a foothold,” “establishing indicators of directionality,” and “taking initial actions” to support the other healthcare professionals to demonstrate their expertise, and “identifying the essence and seamlessly bridging and substituting roles,” “respecting and transferring the roles of the specialized areas that are desired,” and “sharing reliable information and being mindful of communication that does not cause misunderstanding” to work toward multidisciplinary collaboration. In addition, as “the key to coordination between various stakeholders,” the importance of “communicating clearly and correcting misunderstandings” was identified.
