 Purpose: This study was conducted for the purpose of identifying what types of emotions are felt by type 2 diabetic adult males during the course of their experiences in dealing with diabetes. Subjects: The subjects of this study consisted of 10 type 2 diabetic adult males who were currently employed, had been examined on an out-patient basis for at least six consecutive months, were receiving treatment through diet, exercise and administration of oral hypoglycemic agents and were free of complications that impaired their daily lives. Methods and Analysis: The subjects were interviewed using semi-structured interviews when they were examined as out-patients. The contents of those interviews were recorded with the patient's permission and verbatim transcriptions were prepared from those recordings. Those emotions felt by the subjects during the course of their living with diabetes were extracted using continuous comparative analysis for each sentence contained in the verbatim transcriptions. Results: Those emotions felt by the subjects during the course of their living with diabetes consisted of anger, sadness, anguish, apprehension and happiness. Emotions categorized as anger consisted of “disgust with own body being susceptible to infection”and “regret over irregular lifestyle”. Emotions categorized as sadness consisted of “sense of loss of male sexuality”,“sense of loss of normal life”and“despair over unavoidable circumstances”. Emotions categorized as anguish consisted of “sense of burden with respect to self-control and restrictions”, “sense of burden having to live entire life with this disease”, “difficulty in always being hungry”, “sense of placing burden of responsibility on family”and “sense of placing burden of responsibility with respect to job”. Emotions categorized as anxiety consisted of “awareness of being watched by others”, “concern over progression of symptoms”, “fear over appearance of complications”and “apprehension over effects on children”. Emotions categorized as“happiness”consisted of “sense of release resulting from improvement of condition”,“hope for being cured”, “expectations on development of new drugs”and “satisfaction in having achieved control”.
