In this paper we address the question of whether patients with schizophrenia classify life events by only 2 factors in risk perception. It is shown in Kusumi's investigation that people without mental impairment use 3 frames of regulation in risk perception. However, little is known about risk perception in patients with schizophrenia. The fact that patients with schizophrenia experience cognitive abnormalities implies that their frames of regulation in risk perception decrease from 3 to 2.

Using a questionnaire, we surveyed 181 schizophrenic patients, and used exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling to examine this issue. Exploratory factor analysis extracted 4 factors behind risk perception in patients with schizophrenia. Structural equation modeling disclosed a causal structure that risk perception was regulated by only 2 factors in patients with schizophrenia, not by 3 factors as is common with people without mental impairment.

The result of our analysis affords a new perspective on risk perception.
