硬膜外麻酔による鎮痛の恩恵は計り知れないものであるが，その合併症は重篤な転帰を辿るものが多く，いったん発症するとその後の機能予後を著しく悪化させる。実際に麻酔を行う麻酔科医だけでなく，術後管理を行っていく外科医や集中治療医も，起こり得る合併症・初期対応を熟知する必要がある。あらかじめセーフティーネットを張ることで早期発見・早期対処が可能となり，仮にトラブルが生じた際にも良好な神経学的予後が期待できるであろう。ここでは，おのおのの合併症に関して論じていく。

The benefits of epidural anesthesia are well-known. However, complications of this procedure can lead to adverse outcomes, and if they occur, can significantly worsen the patients' functional prognosis. Not only anesthesiologists, but other medical professionals including surgeons and intensivists, should be well aware of the complications of epidural anesthesia and their initial management. With a safety net in place in advance, we can detect and deal with complications quickly and expect an improved prognosis. In this paper, we will discuss the complications of epidural anesthesia in detail.
